Planting Kalam’s Legacy: VETRY’s Green Movement in Tiruppur

Inspired by the vision of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, VETRY has transformed tree planting into a powerful environmental movement through its Vanathukkul Tiruppur initiative. What began in 2015 with a pledge to plant 1.25 lakh saplings soon grew into a district-wide mission, with nearly 25 lakh trees planted across Tiruppur between 2015 and 2025.

Founded by T.R. Sivaram, VETRY focuses on environmental conservation, waterbody restoration, and community participation. The organisation helps farmers plant trees on their land by providing soil testing, recommending suitable species, and supporting sapling maintenance.

Beyond afforestation, VETRY has restored waterbodies, including Andipalayam Lake, helping improve groundwater levels and revive local ecosystems. Its initiatives also include the restoration of the 400-acre Nanjaraayan Bird Sanctuary tank, along with the development of green spaces such as the Bamboo Park at Iduvai.

VETRY’s commitment extends to education and social welfare. Through school development, student support, organic farming initiatives, and farmer training, the organisation continues to create lasting community impact.

For VETRY, Dr. Kalam’s message is more than an inspiration. It is a mission to plant, nurture, and protect trees while encouraging every individual to contribute to a greener future. Through years of dedicated work, VETRY continues to grow Kalam’s legacy, one tree and one community at a time.
